You don’t need to be an expert to take the perfect shot. For a beginner to be a great photographer, all they need is to get good advice and get really good equipment and learn how to use it in order to take memorable photographs. Though no one expects your photos to win awards, although they could, it is important that you seek the help of experts who may help pass their own knowledge to others. Some beginner’s photographs have ended up in magazines, usually because of original subject matter rather than the extraordinary talent of the photographer. The best photography tip that is also practical is to make sure that you know how to use your equipment before leaving. You don’t want to be fumbling to upload your pictures at the last minute and lose them in the process.

Photography can be categorized as either film photography or digital photography. Some photographers prefer film because of its lower initial cost, better dynamic range in capturing detail in whites and blacks, more forgiving of exposure problems, and the film is still in higher resolution. On the other hand, cameras are generally heavier, film can take up a lot of space, it is a continuing cost, films must be developed before viewing and unless you have a darkroom, you are dependent on the lab to edit your images. In digital photography, it has higher initial cost, can easily lose detail in whites and blacks, and the 10 Megapixels is high enough resolution for very large prints. Cameras are generally lighter, one memory card can store more images than a dozen rolls of films, and images can be viewed immediately. You can also edit your images and only print the images you like, and many cameras have built-in filters. In the end, digital and film take both quality images. The real difference in them is what best fits your photographic style and budget.

Wedding Photography : 4 Specific Styles and Techniques

October 7, 2011 by

Comments Off

Each photographer has his or her own style of taking pictures. After many years of shooting, you usually can narrow the various techniques and approaches into different style categories. I have narrowed it down to four different typical formats of wedding photography that we cover. We are completely and fully comfortable shooting each one and allow the couple to choose which style best represents their personality and personal flair!

1. Wedding Photojournalism

A wedding photojournalistic style of photography involves the photographer not being involved nearly as much as normal. The story is told though the photographs and emphasis is taken off of the typical posed and planned pictures. With this style of wedding photography, we tend to stand on the sidelines and shoot from the background, becoming as unobtrusive as possible. However, the photos we capture put the viewer right in the mix of what is going on. We capture natural moments that happen in reality without the typical setting up and posing a picture. With this style of photography, we consider ourselves to be “photographic storytellers,” guiding the viewer through the “story” of your wedding day. This is our choice format of wedding photography. We truly enjoy finding those definite moments of significance that often pass by too quickly and capturing them within our lens.

]]>

2. Traditional Wedding Photography

Unlike the wedding photojournalistic style, this style of photography has much involvement from the photographer. Many of the portraits are set up and posed, incorporating a more traditional approach to wedding pictures. The wedding photographer acts as a director of sorts, guiding the wedding party and guests into formations and poses for photos. Although the main style of shooting for our studio is the Wedding Photojournalistic style, we do have experience in directing and leading wedding parties into the posed group and individual formal pictures.

3. Fashion Wedding Photography

This style of wedding photography rings true with its name – it is focused on the element of fashion. Brides who request fashion wedding photos to be taken often book studio time outside of a normal wedding day shoot. This allows the photographers to plan out a session incorporating more lighting and creative techniques. Doing a fashion wedding shoot in studio also allows the bride more freedom in moving into typical fashion poses (such as the hands on the hips, hunched back pose) paired with a more serious and “fashion-like” facial expression. Both brides and grooms request this style of wedding photography to add something different and dramatic to their wedding photo album.

4. Trash The Dress Wedding Photography

Synonymous with its name, this style of wedding photography involves the “dirtying” of wedding dress worn after the fact. This style of wedding photography is also called “fearless bridal” or “rock the frock.” Typically, brides choose this after everything is said and done to offer a creative alternative to storing away their wedding dress that they will never wear again. A bride can venture out to a beach or a fountain, take pictures in city streets or on railroads, in abandoned buildings or fields, or even get muddied up in the woods. Often times, brides feel that this helps them release the deep tension from the wedding. It can be a bride’s declaration that the wedding is done and the dress will never be worn again, so why not be creative and artistic with it? At our wedding photography studio, we are more than happy to work with brides who would like to “Trash The Dress!”

Digital Photography 101 – The Windows Vs Mac Debate

October 1, 2011 by

Comments Off

One of the most hotly contested concepts in the world of digital photography is that of operating system superiority. Mac users claim that due to OS X’s ease of use and Apple’s eye for design, their systems are the best in the world for storing and editing digital photos. On the other side of the discussion, Windows users have long bandied about the assertion that PCs are more compatible, more universal, and thus more qualified to handle the workload of the digital arts community. So let’s take a look at the differences between these two industry giants.

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows has been the long time standard for business software like Outlook, Word and Excel. The majority of offices use PC’s with windows as this is mainly due to the lower cost of PC equipment and the compatibility of different systems working with windows. However when it comes to digital photography, using Windows gives you no clear advantage over any other operating system.

Software like Adobe Photoshop run almost the same on Windows as a Mac and since Apple switched to using Intel processors now the hardware is almost the same as well. What are the advantages of using Windows? For starters, PCs are cheap, especially when compared to Macs. Much of the software available for OS X is also available for Windows and you can get a good PC that works well with photos for a lot less than an Mac with similar software. If cost is your bottom line, you should probably look into a Windows system.

]]>

Apple Mac

It’s hard to believe that just ten years ago, many industry analysts declared Apple “dead in the water.”. Thanks to innovative design and easy to use software, Apple managed to stage an incredible comeback to become one of the leaders in the world of computers. OS X was designed and built with multi-media in mind and is often praised for its intuitive interface and seamless meshing.

Apple computers are sometimes viewed as less advanced as PCs hardware-wise, and often cost an good chunk of money. The top of the line PowerMac could run you over ,000, and when you consider that the easiest way to upgrade a Mac is to buy a new one, taking the financial plunge can be quite difficult. But one of the biggest advantages is that OS X is a super stable operating system and rarely crashes or suffers from virus threats. You’ll also find interfacing through several programs at once (Photoshop, iPhoto, web sites) is much easier on a Mac than a PC, and can dramatically increase the speed at which you can work.

Most people will naturally select their preferences so the real answer to which operating system is better lies in what ultimately works best for you. There is no difference between the file formats that Photoshop or Lightroom create on either operating system, and having one or the other will not have a negative impact on your ability to work with digital photographs. Your best solution is to visit the Apple store and then visit a computer store and play around with both operating systems. Whichever one makes the most sense to you is probably going to be the best one to invest in, unless you’re looking for something specific your normal OS doesn’t have.

Mac and Windows each have their own strengths and weaknesses, and one or the other could reasonably be declared a victor in certain battles. However when it comes to photography, either one is a good solution for helping take your pictures to the next level. In the end, you really have to choose a system that works for you so you can continually expand and improve your photography skills.

If you are going to have success in digital photography, it is necessary to first learn how to use the owner’s manual for your digital camera. It is easy to find digital photography tips online, but you might be surprised to find that there are few tips about how to read the manual itself, which can be extremely difficult for a beginner. Before you can even begin delving into digital camera techniques and going out to different locations to start shooting, though, you’ve got to know how to read the manual.

It is important to get some good digital photography tips before trying to read your camera owner’s manual, because many of the new terms can be confusing and there can seem to be too much information to digest. In order to learn all the digital photography techniques that the camera is capable of, though, you have to read the manual from cover to cover. You find it hard to achieve success in digital photography if you don’t read the entire manual, because you will limit yourself by not learning some of the most useful and helpful features of the camera.

In order to find the most basic digital photography tips you’ll want to start by reading the overview of your camera’s features, and then you can decide what you want like to most learn more about. It is important to learn the basic digital photography techniques for that feature, which will become clearer over time and after great practice. To find real success in digital photography, you shouldn’t stop until you know this feature inside and out and don’t go on to the next feature until you have fully explored this one.

Food Photography: 5 Tips You Need to Know

September 3, 2011 by

Everyone knows that the poster of that delicious looking Big Mac is not exactly indicative of the product they’re about to unwrap. But if it weren’t for that enticing, mouth-watering photo, you might not have even given it a try. Before you go jumping into pursuing a career in food photography, you should probably do some research first–let this be your first stop!

Shoot from an interesting angle. Most people are accustomed to looking at food at a downward angle given that table height is lower than eye level. Take a different approach to how you want your audience to view food. Create dimension to food by shooting at plate level, this way you can really emphasize the height of that towering chocolate cake or the thickness of that juicy steak. Getting down to plate level also emphasizes texture and detail that an overhead shot lacks.

Cut it up! Although that chocolate cake looks delicious sitting on a cake pedestal, cutting a slice out of it to show its depth and inner texture takes the photo up a notch. Don’t be scared to play with food. Peel apart the sections of an orange, break a chocolate bar into pieces, cut that juicy burger in half to show all of the layers. The more you’re able to reveal about the subject, the more appealing it will be to your audience.

]]>

Don’t be afraid to get close and crop in tightly. A great technique to draw emphasis to the plate is by eliminating all of the other distractions. If it’s the food that is the focus of the photograph, be sure to stick to only the elements necessary to emphasize that subject. Keep the background elements as simple as possible and don’t feel the need to fill every bit of open space with props. Less is more in the case of food photography.

Use natural lighting when possible. While it can be argued that using flash can really enhance a photo, you should shy away from it when food is your subject. It may actually make your food appear less appealing and harsh when directly aimed at the subject, so as a rule you should just avoid it whenever possible. If absolutely necessary, bounce the flash off the ceiling or nearby wall. Open up your lens and shoot near a window or skylight during the day for the best results.

Cheating is ok! Due to the length of time that shoots can take, you may have to fake some of the effects. Want to make something look like it’s still steaming hot off the stove? Microwave a couple wet cottonballs and place close to the subject but not in view of the lens. Want to make something glisten? Use a little oil on a paintbrush and lightly cover your subject. Keep in mind that too much oil will make your subject appear greasy in photos—use wisely!

Wedding Photography – How to Choose the Right Lens

August 31, 2011 by

You have begun photographing weddings and now it is time to upgrade your gear to the Pro’s level. Through your experience and research on other professional wedding photographers, you realize that there is an assortment of different tastes of the perfect lenses for wedding photography. The truth is, there is no perfect kit. Here I will give you a flavour of a few lens I feel you must have when photographing a wedding.

Portrait Lens

The most important lens to have is a portrait lens. To know how to choose a preferred portrait lens over another, it is important to understand some of the fundamentals of how a lens works.

When you direct a camera at a subject, you produce an image through the viewfinder (this is where the photographer looks through in a digital camera). The lens on the camera magnifies the image producing an image that is either ‘x’ times more closer or ‘x’ times more smaller. Different bodies calculate the magnification at different ratios. A typical focal length you would want for a portrait shot is 85mm. A 50mm lens with a body that magnifies 1.6x (crop factor) should do the trick. It is always a good thing to try shooting portrait photos at a distance. Although there are no strict guidelines in how you take your photos, keep in mind that when you move up closer to your subject, the larger the object is you are focusing on in the forefront. Here are just a few suggestions for your next purchase of wedding portrait lenses.

]]>

Nikon 50mm f/1.8

This is a prime lens. It retails for about 0 CAD and is one of the best lens you can get for the small price tag it’s got. The lens has a wide aperture of 1.8 allowing you to really focus in on a subject, while blurring your background. Very cool effect.

Nikon 85mm f/1.4

This is also a prime lens, probably one of the best in the market right now for wedding photography. Although it is a bit more pricy (,180 CAD), the amount of detail and sharpness you get from this lens is unimaginable.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8

This is a telephoto (zoom) lens that could be your only purchase of zoom lenses. Not only does it produce sharp photos, but you can get up in front of your subject as close as 200mm. At 1.6x crop, your focal length is about 320mm. Imagine that, the only telephoto lens you will ever need. A nifty lens like the 70-200mm comes with a nifty price tag too. You can purchase this lens for about ,800 CAD.

Those are just a few of the portrait lenses you should have for taking wedding photographs. I would recommend sticking with Nikon branded lenses if you have a Nikon body. Other brands such as Sigma and Tamron has similar lenses that can produce matching results if you’ve mastered using their lenses. Continue reading and learning about wedding photography techniques. After you’ve equipped yourself with quality gear, the next step is all in your imagination and creativity. Go capture it!

Learn Digital Photography – How to Become a Wedding Photographer

August 21, 2011 by

My first words to you as you consider the world of wedding photography is, “Are you stark staring crazy?”. Why would anyone want to enter this world? There are just so many things that can go wrong and this is one area of photography that cannot be reshot without redoing the whole event which is impossible. You need nerves of steel and the patience of Job.

Now if you have considered all the pitfalls and weighed the pros and cons and have decided that you are one of the chosen few and can stand the pressure, here are some pointers that will get you to the top of your game.

1. Learn digital photography

This may sound simple and quite broad. If you aren’t an accomplished photographer then learn photography and acquire the skills that you need to shoot great photos. If you are an accomplished film photographer learn all you can about digital photography. You need to function as a digital photographer knowing each of the skills necessary to make you successful. For example, know the limitations and benefits of shooting with digital and what can be improved or rescued in the digital darkroom. You will make mistakes and there will be unforseen problems and you need to know what can be done before you have a heart attack and call the bride with bad news. At my own wedding half the photos were lost because of film problems. A fair amount would’ve been rescued if it had been digital.

]]>

2. Learn the basics of wedding photography

There are two routes to go with this point. Firstly, the self taught route. Buy wedding magazines and books on wedding photography and study them religiously. Get to know the types of shot people like and the scenes they prefer. Great ideas come from wedding magazines. If you want to cheat a little go to a wedding photographer and ask to see their work or look at it on the walls of their studio or shop. The second route is more difficult. Offer your services to a wedding photographer as an assistant. Once you are a wedding photographer you’ll realise how invaluable and assistant can be. Here you’ll learn many tricks and techniques and will pick up tips that you won’t read about in books. The key here again is to learn wedding photography on the job.

3. Plan and practise

More preparation than any other area of photography needs to go into a wedding shoot and planning is essential. Your biggest hurdle is the transition from other genres of photography to wedding photography. When you actually do the shoot you should know every scene, lighting condition, location and sequence of shots. Some photographers go as far as preparing a shot sheet, a sketch of every shot at every location, so that they know one shot after the other and what is coming up next. Each camera setting is noted next to the shot. Maybe a bit overkill to some but the risk of failure is greatly reduced.

4. Dive into the deep end

Offer your services free to friends and family for all kinds of occasions as an unofficial photographer. If you’re brave enough offer to do a wedding or ask permission to take photos in addition to the photographer they have engaged. Get the main photographer’s permission and don’t get in the way. What the experience will do is allow you to learn the best exposures, lighting conditions and using a flash on a regular basis. Nothing helps better than experience and this helps you with the transition to bigger things.

Wedding photography can be a really profitable business if your nerves can take the pressure. It is a very competitive form of photography and many offer cut throat prices. Don’t aim at just average but rather work at acquiring unique skills that will set you apart from the others. The final product should be the deciding factor and not the person’s wallet.

The bottom line with any type of photography is learning the skills and developing your abilities as a photographer. Learn more about photography and continue adding to your skills basket in becoming an accomplished wedding photographer.
